Last Monday marked the first day a woman hosted all three rounds of Spoken Word Paris.

I feel pretty honored to have been that person. Not because it sounds cool to say ( although it does) :-), but really because I am so pleased to have been asked to take a  more active role in this awesome community. I LOVE Spoken Word Paris. I have learnt and grown so much. I’ve made some great friends and been blessed to have met some of whom I believe will be this generation’s finest poets.

Last Monday was also simply tons of fun. We heard impressive pieces from everyone, all three rounds were great! If you read, kudos to you, you are a talented bunch! To the visitors who dared to share, thanks much for leaving a bit of you here with us in Paris. To the guy who made unkind comments and spoke right through Fran’s reading, you actually made the event that much more exciting. So thank you too. And Fran, don’t worry, your story was still awesome!

Thanks to the audience for being supportive and patient in the situation and to the the two strong guys, Alberto and Apo who stepped in to play bodyguard when things got a bit heated. They were true renaissance men, “writers and fighters”.

No one stayed on theme. But as usual, everyone tried to squeeze the theme in. Haha!

There were a few pieces that stood out for me. The first from Micah from New York, who got us thinking with his powerful piece on trying to convince his friend not to take his own life. Then there was Tyler’s moving reading on his mother’s battle with cancer.  Fred was hilarious in his monologue on animal documentaries and his questions on “what if men were like animals and by extension trees”…I think. I’m not too sure. I was honestly too busy laughing. Alberto read his poem in “Italiano”and Caitlin told of her her dead/divorced husband and the Spanish man on the bus, who fell in love with her. Dawn, sang a song about her friend…Caitlin.

It was also a pleasure to have Will and James, the editors of The Belleville Park Pages, visiting with us. (Buy a copy, it’s only 2 euros). 🙂

Bon, bref. Monday was great. You laughed at my corny jokes and endured my bad dancing. You were so kind. You listened as I introduced every female poet by saying she was “lovely”. You gave generously to the hat. Thank you for making my first time a truly memorable one!

Big thanks to David and Alberto, these guys are stars! David you have created something totally beautiful, thank you for your vision. Thanks also to Acey the awesome photographer. To you all, please continue to support the community of Spoken Word. Keep writing, keep sharing, keep coming out to listen and see you next Monday 🙂

Shakespeare’s Resurrection Day

Friday April 25th au Chat Noir 7pm until the bar closes… and then, who knows?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So. It’s Shakespeare’s Resurrection Day this Friday (he was born and died on 23rd April). And it’s also David Barnes’ 43rd birthday. So after doing SpokenWord at the Chat Noir for 2 years we’re throwing a joint party with the bar staff – with free food and some free punch, live Balkan music, DJs Gabriel and Bruce and of course some Shakespearean spoken word performances! Come celebrate with us and finally meet the folks who pour your beer on a Monday night, then get down and dance! Oscillate wildly! Like ecstatic pigeons. More details soon.

Report from April 7: Nicknames!

Report by Copito De Nieve. Photos by: Bine. Full album here.

We started 1 hour and 20 minutes late due to a scheduling accident but we don’t know how we made it. It was a Nicknames night and we had (in order of appearance): Salacious Crumb, Anarchy, Prince Albert, Ginger bitch, The Asparagus, our featured reader Annie (That’s a nickname) Brechin. Yannicus (from the Gladiator), Crowd, Donkey, The Spaniard, No nicknames, Godot, Flux or Hannuman, Amu, Bean and To the Newens! They will be back next Monday with their original names but you’ll find them very confused and philosophical, given that our next theme is: Dilemma!

Jazz Poetry Slam au Chat Noir Friday 11th April

This was great the last times – at SpokenWord itself but also when Moe ran a whole Friday night. Poets give the band a beat, a rhthym, a theme or an atmosphere and the band will improvise behind the poet.

You get more time than at SpokenWord and it really adds something to prose or poetry to have the music interacting with and backing what you’re doing.

Plus Moe and the band are real good jazz musicians and will do their own pieces, songs and standards or Moe’s jazz poetry too.

The last Friday night ended with lots of singing and a great time had by all.

The Other Writers’ Group

A writers’ workshop and the heart of a community of writers in Paris. We practice the art of giving useful feedback on stories and poetry in a spirit of encouragement and learning of the craft of writing. The experienced leaders, writers David Barnes and Bruce Sherfield, create a safe space to lead passionate enquiry into what makes stories and poems work. The atmosphere is that of a university tutorial focussed on fostering talent. David has been running the workshop since 2005, Bruce joined him in 2011. Suggested donation 5 euros.

The Other Writers’ Group
6.30pm-8.30pm every Sunday at Shakespeare & Company, 37 rue de la Bûcherie, 75005. Métro Saint Michel. Bring 10 copies of a poem or of 4 pages of prose for insightful feedback. Or come to listen and practice the art of giving useful and encouraging feedback to others. What makes a story work? What makes a poem strong? 6 euros participation. Click here
for more info. Click on the blue stamp on the right to sign up to the mailing list.

David Barnes is a short story writer and poet, prose editor of Strangers in Paris (Tightrope Books, 2011) and editor of The Bastille lit magazine. His short stories and poems have been published in a number of magazines. He has run the group since he started it in 2005.

Building a writers’ community at Shakespeare & Company

Other Writers' GroupThe Other Writers’ Group is a space for all those who love writing to meet and practice the art of giving useful feedback on stories and poems.

Everyone is welcome – whether you’re a beginner writing your first poem or an experienced writer who has developed the craft over many years.

The workshop is led by David Barnes & Bruce Sherfield – “Between us we have 12 years experience of running the group. We believe useful feedback is both challenging and respectful.”

“We make sure the space is safe and nurturing so that challenging feedback can be offered. Conflicts of ideas are stimulating, creative and respectful. They produce growth in writing skill.”

The Other Writers’ Group has been running on these principles since 2005. Its goal, as always, is the development of community among writers.

In March we’re meeting at 12pm-2pm on Saturdays in the library at Shakespeare & Company. Taking part is only 6 euros. If you want feedback on your own writing bring 10 copies of your poem or 10 copies of 4 pages of your prose.
